AECOM acquires Norwegian AI startup Consigli for $390M

Global infrastructure consulting giant AECOM has finalized the acquisition of Consigli, a Norwegian artificial intelligence (AI) startup, in a deal valued at $390 million. The transaction, first reported by Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv, marks a significant milestone for both companies after having previously collaborated on multiple projects.
Founded in 2020, Consigli describes itself as an "autonomous engineer" and an "AI agent for real estate development." The startup leverages artificial intelligence to streamline various processes in planning and engineering. Consigli claims that "up to 80 percent of today’s engineering work can be automated, freeing human experts to focus on innovation, oversight, and creating real value."
Among the tasks automated by the company’s technology are MPE engineering, space analysis, unit optimization, and the preparation of tender documents. Additionally, Consigli can generate clash-free Stage 3 BIM models, complete with drawings, system strategies, and full bills of quantities. The firm also highlights its ability to cut material use in designs by 20%, underscoring its potential contribution to more sustainable construction practices.
This acquisition underscores AECOM’s continued interest in integrating AI technology into its operations as the architecture and engineering industry increasingly adopts AI-driven solutions.
Last month, Archinect explored this trend through an interview with AI-native architecture firm Cedar. As AI adoption gains traction, Consigli's innovative approach could further position AECOM as a leader in combining advanced technology with infrastructure development.
The partnership between AECOM and Consigli brings together advanced AI capabilities and global expertise in infrastructure, potentially reshaping efficiency and innovation in the sector. This move signals a growing recognition of the transformative role AI can play in modern engineering and real estate development.
