Warner Music Group (WMG) has announced its acquisition of Sureel AI, an AI attribution startup founded in 2022. The move signals WMG's efforts to strengthen its ability to monitor and manage the use of its artists' intellectual property in AI-generated content and training models.

Sureel AI's proprietary technology, described as creating "AI DNA" for songs, dissects compositions into component parts. This allows the company to trace how AI models interact with and incorporate those elements. According to WMG, this acquisition will help the company improve its ability to protect, control, and monetize its catalog of works, ensuring that artists and songwriters retain control over their intellectual property.

"Bringing Sureel into WMG strengthens our capability for protection, control and monetization and ensures that the creative community remains in control of its intellectual property, name, image, likeness, and voice", said Robert Kyncl, WMG's chief executive, in the announcement.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Expanding AI and IP Protection for Artists

In addition to AI attribution technology, Sureel also offers intellectual property provenance, audit and compliance reporting, model optimization, and AI business intelligence. The startup’s tools extend to a name, image, and likeness (NIL) attribution suite, which can track the use of artist voices, likenesses, and performance identities in AI systems. This includes tracing voice clones, AI-generated avatars, and style replication.

Despite its integration with Warner Music Group, Sureel AI will continue to operate as an independent platform, serving the broader music and AI ecosystem. This approach aligns with the company’s stated goal of providing transparency and fairness in the evolving landscape of AI and music.

"Rightsholders deserve to know how AI interacts with their work, and to share fairly in the value it creates", said Sureel founder and chief executive Tamay Aykut. "Sureel was built to make that possible, and with WMG’s backing, we can deliver on our mission at scale, building a more transparent and fair future and driving value growth for the whole music and entertainment ecosystem."

WMG’s Evolving Approach to AI

Warner Music’s acquisition of Sureel AI marks another step in its evolving approach to AI technologies. Initially critical of AI’s impact on music, WMG had filed a lawsuit against music-generation startup Suno in 2024. However, the company shifted its stance by settling the lawsuit and signing a licensing agreement with Suno in 2025. WMG emphasized that artists and songwriters would maintain full control over how their work is used in AI-generated music.

Last year, WMG also resolved its legal dispute with AI music startup Udio, securing another licensing deal. These developments underline the company's increasing focus on integrating AI technologies while safeguarding the rights of its artists.

In contrast, other major music labels, such as Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group, are still pursuing significant copyright infringement cases against AI music companies.

A Step Forward for Transparency and Control

With this acquisition, Warner Music Group aims to lead the charge in addressing the challenges posed by AI in the music industry. By leveraging Sureel AI’s cutting-edge attribution tools, WMG is taking proactive steps to ensure that artists and rightsholders remain central to the conversation around AI and intellectual property. Whether this marks the beginning of a broader industry shift remains to be seen, but WMG’s approach signals a strong stance on transparency, control, and fairness in the intersection of music and artificial intelligence.
